The foundation of every lawn starts with the soil. If you have substandard soil, then it is going to be extremely difficult to develop a healthy and thriving lawn. If you build a strong foundation, then you can build a house that will last for many years to come. Your lawn is no different. Your soil needs to have the right amount of loam and pH level to sustain a strong root and grass plant system. Ideally, you want a soil that is a medium grade loam between clay and sand. It looks much like a deep, rich brown when you dig under the surface. You also want to have an average pH level that is not too alkaline or acidic.
There are ways to supplement your soil to develop it into exactly what you need if it is lacking, but first you have to find out where you are sitting. That is where lawn soil testing comes in. You can easily test your soil by grabbing several samples from different spots around your lawn and putting it into a baggy. Then you will want to send it off to a testing center that can perform soil testing. They will then send you back a report with all the figures on your soil so that you will know exactly what you need to do to make your soil ideal.
